Automated Transit Network (ATN) Demonstration Pilot loading bay at GCIC

automated transit network pilot project

The Automated Transit Network (ATN) Demonstration Pilot  is a free, on-demand transit demonstration coming December 2026 connecting the ATL SkyTrain at the Georgia International Convention Center to the Gateway Center Arena using dedicated lanes called fixed guideways.

ATN Purpose and Goal

The ATN demonstration pilot is a test project to show how an ATN system can work in real-life using Glydways technology. It will demonstrate the user experience of the ATN and illustrate how the system can grow over time, in real-world environments.

ATN Operations

The ATN will operate five autonomous vehicles operating along a 0.49-mile long dedicated guideway, running four days a week for up to eight hours per day. With an average trip time of 2.5 minutes, the system can accommodate more than 400 rides per hour. The guideway will provide direct connections between the Arena, the new regional trailhead and the SkyTrain Station. The pilot demonstration will run for 24 months beginning at the end of 2026.

ATN Project history

A 2019 transit feasibility study identified the ATL airport area as a 24/7 mobility district, where both travelers and workers require reliable transportation around the clock. The study identified two primary gaps in existing transit service: inadequate first- and last-mile connectivity and the presence of unserved or underserved populations.

To address these gaps, the study recommended piloting three solutions - Autonomous Shuttles, an Automated Transit Network (ATN) and Microtransit - to evaluate their viability for expanding the transit footprint in South Metro Atlanta.

ATN is planned, designed, constructed and operated by the Atlanta Personal Rapid Transit Solutions (APRTS) project team. Powered by Glydways technology, this first-of-its-kind system will connect the Skytrain at the Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) to the Gateways Arena.
