ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) commemorates the completion of the newly-constructed Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) project at I-285 and State Route 6/ Camp Creek Parkway in Fulton County. The DDI was designed and constructed to address the high traffic and related travel delays and vehicle crashes in the project area, as well as to improve pedestrian and bicycle access at this busy interchange.
“We are excited to officially complete the Camp Creek DDI. This project will improve traffic flow and enhance safety along Camp Creek Parkway and I-285,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry, P.E. “With its innovative design and proximity to the world’s busiest passenger airport, we are confident that this project will provide a distinctive gateway not only for the drivers, but also for the bikers and pedestrians that will travel through this DDI each day.”
Instead of a typical in-person ribbon-cutting event to mark the project completion, Georgia DOT followed social distancing practices and produced a drone video which features traffic flow through the final DDI configuration and the landscaping and lighting improvements at the I-285/Camp Creek Parkway interchange. The 5-minute video features State Transportation Board members Stacy Key and Dana Lemon and highlights Georgia DOT’s partnership with the Aerotropolis Community Improvement Districts and local stakeholders, including the cities of Atlanta, East Point, College Park, Hapeville and South Fulton.
“GDOT is also proud of the partnerships that helped develop and move this project along,” said State Transportation board member Dana Lemon (CD 13). “The leadership of the Aerotropolis CID and the area cities have been involved with this project since the beginning and key to helping us deliver a project that the local communities can be proud of.”
State Transportation Board member Stacey Key (CD 5) said, “GDOT traffic engineers determined that a DDI would be a great solution in this area, in close proximity to the retail stores and restaurants in Camp Creek Marketplace, as well as several office complexes and industrial parks. This DDI will help improve mobility and bike and pedestrian safety in the area.”
The I-285 at Camp Creek Parkway DDI is the 7th DDI constructed in Georgia (others in metro Atlanta include those at I-285 at Ashford-Dunwoody, I-85 at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85 at Pleasant Hill). The $13 million project included widening the existing bridge, adding the pedestrian sidewalk in a newly constructed median, resurfacing the roadway, installing new traffic signal equipment, and making improvements to the bridge.
The DDI configuration is designed to reduce driver turn movements to access and leave the interstate and reduce traffic back-ups and delays. Nationally, DDIs have proven to be cost-effective, quick-delivery ways to address congested, high-traffic interstate access points.
